PROJECT OVERVIEW

According to the survey results, 48.4 % of households have pets in the average American metro area. However, Tucson, Ariz. had the highest rate of pet ownership, with close to 60 % of households with at least one pet. Oklahoma City was second, and Austin was third, with just over 50 % of households containing pets. Other Texas cities on the list included San Antonio at No. 4 and Houston at No. 13.

“Austin is the 3rd city in the United States with the highest rate of pet ownership, with over 50 % of households containing pets.”

If you’re a dog lover looking to move to the big city, pet-friendliness is probably a big part of what you want in a new town then Austin is a town for you! Most restaurants welcome dogs to join dinners on the patio, and the temperate climate is perfect for eating outside. And most of the apartment communities have a “pet-friendly” policy. Austin has 15 off-leash dog parks, 317 pet-friendly restaurants, and 299 pet-friendly hotels.

Where are the Animal Companions?

I chose to focus my venture around pet walking and sitting services in Austin, TX. Inspired by my own battle with a busy schedule, traveling, and taking care of my dog, this was a space I felt held a lot of potential for change.

DEFINING THE PROBLEM

Animal Cruelty

Animal cruelty encompasses a range of behaviors harmful to animals, from neglect to malicious killing. Most cruelty investigated by humane officers is unintentional neglect that can be resolved through education. Intentional cruelty can run the gamut from knowingly depriving an animal of food, water, shelter, socialization, or veterinary care to maliciously torturing, maiming, mutilating, or killing an animal.

What is criminal animal neglect?

Animal neglect situations are those in which the animal's caretaker or owner fails to provide food, water, shelter or veterinary care sufficient for survival. It can be either deliberate or unintentional, but either way, the animal suffers terribly. Extended periods of neglect can lead to severely compromised health or even death. Animal control agencies nationwide report that animal neglect cases are the most frequent calls to which they respond.

How does it cause animal suffering?

The pain of an animal who lingers with untreated illness or wounds, or without nourishment, or shelter, can be tremendous— sometimes even more so than those who are victims of directly inflicted violence, because their suffering is so prolonged. Animals who starve to death experience a myriad of painful symptoms throughout each stage of their physical deterioration. An initial loss of body fat is followed by muscle loss and atrophy and, ultimately, organ failure. In long-term starvation, degeneration of the liver, cardiac changes, anemia and skin lesions may develop.

An animal without proper shelter can also quickly succumb to extreme heat or cold. Often these animals perish only feet away from the homes in which their caretakers live.

Dogs who are continually chained are also neglect victims, even if it may not be illegal in that particular jurisdiction. Because dogs are social pack animals, isolating them at the end of a chain causes them anguish that can drive them to aggression, neuroses and self-mutilation behaviors. Chained dogs are also more likely to be victims of starvation, because their confinement renders them particularly helpless.

RESEARCH & DISCOVERY

HOW MANY PETS ARE ABANDONED?

There are about 70 million stray animals living in the U.S. Of this 70 million, only about 6 to 8 million cats and dogs enter the nation’s 3,500 shelters every year.

Humane Society of the United States.

Artboard3.png

That evens out to about 5 homeless animals for every homeless person in the U.S.

 DoSomething.org.

Each year, approximately 2.7 million dogs and cats are killed because shelters are too full and there aren’t enough adoptive homes.

25% of dogs that enter local shelters are purebred.

Millions of dogs are left on the streets every single year. And it, unfortunately, happens all over the world. Many of these poor abandoned animals die and some are taken to shelters. Sadly, very few are adopted by loving families.

To find a deep understanding of the problem, I went to see the statistics of animal abundance and started my research with Austin Animal Center. After researching their website I was able to find reports of years 2017 and 2018 available for the public here.

Austin Animal Center year 2018 intakes

Austin Animal Center year 2018 intakes

Top Takeaways From Intakes:

  1. The majority of animals brought to the shelter are strays.

  2. The owner surrenders 20 % of animals.

  3. 681 abandoned adult cats, 584 puppies and 1464 adult dogs were accepted to the shelter in 2018.

Top Takeaways from Outcomes:

  1. 49% of animals were adopted in 2018, 6703 of them were puppies, 2915 were kittens and 2857 were adult dogs.

  2. 23% of animals were transferred elsewhere and that leaves us without data on what happened to them after.

  3. 20% of pets were returned to the owner. Owners were given a second chance, and there is no guarantee that animals will not end up in the shelter again.

Austin Animal Center 2017 and 2018 years comparison intakes

Austin Animal Center 2017 and 2018 years comparison intakes

Top Takeaways from Compering Intakes:

Since I was not able to retrieve the most recent data from the year 2019, I decided to compare 2017 and 2018 to see the changes with the years, how the adoption process is being improved and how many more or less animals are being abandoned by their owners. Comparing years 2017 and 2018, I do not see a very noticeable change of animal intakes. Almost the same number of dogs were surrendered by the owner who still leaves us with 20%, and only 1% more stray dogs were brought in.

The morality of pet ownership is not improving. Owners do not stop making wrong decisions towards their pets, and around 3300 pets are being surrendered by owners in the Austin area each year. But what about the pets being neglected that nobody knows about?

FINDINGS FROM INTERVIEWS AND SURVEYS

Why people abandon and neglect their pets…And it’s not what you think.

Affinity Diagram collected through users customers interviews and online surveys

Affinity Diagram collected through users customers interviews and online surveys

I will never defend an act as cruel as abandoning or neglecting an animal. But I do want to understand the major reasons behind it. Would you like to know why some owners abandon and/or neglect their pets? Here are the most common reasons for it:

1. Illness

Some pets have health issues and need expensive treatment that the family may be unable to afford. Sometimes the owner doesn’t have the time to take care of them, either.

Illness.png
Behaviour.png

2. Behavior

A destructive, dangerous, disobedient, or unstable dog is more likely to be abandoned than a calm, obedient, and harmless one. But usually, when the animal is not the “perfect” pet, it’s simply a lack of training and patience.

3. Money

Keeping an animal healthy can be very expensive, since the prices of food and healthcare are high. Therefore if a pet owner is unemployed or in debt, they may abandon their pet.

Money.png
Moving.png

4. Moving

Relocating from a house to a smaller place may lead some individuals to abandon their pets, especially if they are large dogs, for example.

5. Age

You’re more likely to find older dogs abandoned than puppies. Why? Because they’re no longer “fun and cute”; instead, they need extra care and attention.

Age.png
Boredom.png

6. Boredom

There is nothing worse than giving a child a puppy as a gift. Why? The reason is simple: a child feels like the puppy is merely a toy, so they’ll soon grow tired or bored of him. Since the child no longer pays attention to the pet or feeds it, the parents may decide to abandon it.

7. Illness or death of the owner

Many times, when an older person dies or hospitalized, the family members don’t know what to do with their pets. A lot of times they decide to leave the pet to die, even if they have been with the family for many years.

Death owner.png
Child Birth.png

8. Birth of a child

When a couple doesn’t have any children, they usually treat the dog like a baby. But when the family grows, the couple is no longer interested in the pet and will most likely leave it on the street.

9. Travel or vacation

Did you know that many animals are abandoned in the summer? Some people simply don’t want to take their dogs to a kennel or leave them with a family member. Instead, they decide to abandon them.

Travel.png
Litter.png

10. Unwanted litters

Not spaying a female dog is a big problem. When the puppies come people may not know what to do with them. Instead of giving them up for adoption, some decide to abandon the puppies along with their mother. The street is a hard place for young animals.

11. No longer profitable

Many people use dogs as a money-making venture, whether in races, fights, or breeding. This makes the animal a source of substantial income. When the dog gets old, sick, or can no longer have puppies, they’re left on the street or abandoned.

HYPOTHESIS

I believe that most pet owners are neglecting their pets because of the expenses associated with pet care and lack of time.

Artboard3.png

BUILDING EMPATHY

USER PERSONA

Based on my research, I recognize that there might be many user types that I would like to solve problems for. In this project, I have decided to focus on one Persona since their needs were the most common and based on two reasons previously discovered in my research:

  • Lack of Time

  • Lack of Money

Please meet Amanda Davis, and she will help you to better empathize with my main user groups and prioritize goals according to their needs.

Persona.png

To reinforce persona-based design thinking through an intimate understanding of our target customer I decided to create empathy map. I believe that empathy mapping helps me derive insights from my user research and foster a greater awareness of, and empathy for target customers. Similar to a user persona above, an empathy map will visualize user needs, condense user data into a brief chart, and help me consider what customers want -- not what I think they want.

THE PROBLEM

Pet owners need to use pet walking & sitting services more often because pets are being neglected due to their busy schedules and life circumstances.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

Only using Yelp search, I found 257 pet walking and sitting services in Austin, TX. It looks like the market is overwhelmed with the choices of services and individual humans that you can contact to help with a pet.

I decided to take the most popular 10 pet walking/sitting services and make a comparison analysis. Besides understanding what services they provide, I was mainly interested in pricing and platforms they use. Below please see some of the most popular competitors in the Austin area.

Competitive Analysis.png

Comparison Analysis Top Takeaways:

  1. Only 2 of the most popular pet services are offering Mobile Apps. Those 2 companies are Wag and Rover.

  2. Some services are unclear about the pricing, which can confuse the user and prevent from using their services on a daily basis.

  3. The most affordable dog walk will cost the user $13 if she is able to schedule it with one of the Rover clients on time. Researching Rover services, they are offering a wide selection of dog walkers and the opportunity to chat with them. The cheapest walker I found charged $13, but most of them start at $15 and up for a short walk.

math.png

If Amanda needs to schedule walking service for her dog, it will cost her $320 a month, not including tips and taxes associated with this fee. And this is just once per day on weekdays, assuming she is home all weekend and on time from work for a third walk.

Monthly grocery budget for 1 person household should be around $251, which is less than dog walking expenses.

MintLife

An average cost for car insurance payments in Texas is $152 a month, which is less than dog walking expenses.

Carinsurance.com

The average utility bill for a typical renter household will cost approximately $240, which is less than dog walking expenses.

Apartment List

Artboard.png

With the above statistics, I can confidently say that dog walking services are very expensive and are luxuries instead of necessary expenses.

So what happens when a person has another pet? Remember, Amanda is an owner of 1 dog and 1 cat.

4. The most affordable cat/pet sitting service you will find is $45 from Walk ATX. And if you are not able to book it on time, the next price offered is $52 from WAG, not including taxes, tips, and transportation expenses.

If Amanda travels at least one night of the month, $45+ is added to her expenses. Her monthly budgeting on pet care should start at $400.  But let us look at her budget first:

Formula.png

Amanda’s annual income is $42,000, which means she actually takes home a paycheck with $2,908 a month. If her monthly budget is $2,707, she will not be able to afford pet care services.

How is it possible for those 50% of households in Austin, TX, that are pet owners to provide and afford dog walking services when needed? Here’s the truth - they cannot afford pet care services, and as a result, the animal may be neglected.

 REVISED PROBLEM STATEMENT

Animals are being neglected each day because pet owners do not use pet services when needed, as they cannot afford them.

SOLUTION & GOALS

To minimize animal neglect, I want to offer pet owners affordable pet care services where they can request help with feeding, walking, sheltering, and socializing their pet.

Sleeping Cat.png

The product vision:

There were many things that a solution could have, but I decided these were the most pressing. As a product, I wanted to position it as the leading and affordable platform with 3 key focus areas:

  1. Affordable, which will be a result of a neighbor's connections and collaboration. To find an answer to the questions, "How to make pet care services affordable?" I had to find a solution to "How to attract people taking care of someone's pet for less money?" The answer is collaboration. Only pet owners, friends, and good neighbors will be willing to help.

The idea of creating a service where people can help each other was born before this project but required research. After research and user interviews I began understanding users and their pain-points. I realized that pet owners would help each other if they have an existing platform that coordinates it. And this is where I step into the market, offering my product for people that cannot afford expensive services.

  2. Primarily used on mobile devices. My goal is to create a mobile app instead of a website that gives users opportunities and 24-hour access to the services anywhere they are. Research studies by VWO Blog have shown that mobile users spend 86% of their time on mobile apps and just 14% of the time on mobile websites. Moreover, the average time users spend on mobile apps is also increasing — rising by 21% in one year. With people traveling and working, pet care service should primarily be available on mobile for fast and easy access.

  3. Always available on demand.  I need to make sure my app will allow pet owners to request service immediately, which means always offering options of walkers/caregivers. This will require involving many marketing strategies and promotions within different communities.

 STORYBOARD

I created a storyboard, where my persona (Amanda) is facing a problem in staying late at work while both of her pets at home are hungry and lonely, she can’t leave earlier, and stressing about neglecting her pets doesn’t help to complete her work. Using the Neighbor Pet mobile App helped her overcome this problem. Imagining the scenario helped me empathize with the users, and I could better address the frustrations they would face and fear of mistreating their pets. It also shows the user how simple it is to help someone in her neighborhood by saving a pet from neglect. By being part of Neighbor Pet community users not only earns points for the future services but even enjoy the time spent with that animal!

USER FLOWS

Since I now had a clear idea of what users needed and wanted I could begin creating their flow throughout the app. Working through the user flows helped me to map out the paths a user would take but I soon found it to be messy and didn’t seem exactly right. My first user flow was bloated and not very good. I started to recognize many faults when I began the wireframing, and below are the final two main user flows that are important for my app. From the following user flows you should see:

  1. How user’s path will look when Amanda needs to schedule a service for her pet.

  2. How user’s path will look when Amanda is ready to become a neighbor for the pet owners.

Afterthoughts

As an animal lover, I personally couldn't even imagine the idea of just abandoning a pet, unsure of whether they'll survive or not, or hope the pet will be okay for a long period of time left alone.

In many cases, animal abuse isn’t as obvious as one might think. Most people are just busy, some people cannot afford more help, and some just don’t care.

That’s why we need to understand animal abuse, break down what it entails, and fight against it at every opportunity. If nobody speaks up or stops the abuse, it will continue to occur.

My goal was to show how big this problem is and to design a solution on how we can help each other. How can this world full of technologies still allow animals to suffer? If you like my idea, and would love to help me build this mobile app, please contact me, so we can discuss more. And right now, please don’t forget:

  1. Pets are part of your family

  2. Pets trust you

  3. Pets will stay by you for years

  4. They fulfill our lives

  5. We now have technology to help us.

Inspired by those who truly love us.
